Adding Relatability to Science Communications  (view poster here)
Introduced in session: Maximizing the value of NOAA data through user engagement

Trinity Foreman (Innovative Consulting & Management Services [ICMS] for NOAA NCEI), Greg Hammer (NOAA NCEI); Jennifer Fulford (Innovative Consulting & Management Services [ICMS] for NOAA NCEI); Andrea Andersen, (Innovative Consulting & Management Services [ICMS] for NOAA NCEI)

In traditional science writing, descriptive language is often seen as overembellishment and is commonly discouraged, but in public-facing communications this strategy is a key tool for increasing the public understanding of research. Adding relatability to data, large numbers, and statistics expands the reach and impact of the information, ensuring its place in public dialogue and awareness. In this poster, we offer suggestions on ways to humanize your data and communicate the significance of your work to public audiences through effective verbal and visual strategies. By providing examples of effective infographics, analogies, and free comparative tools, this poster will show the methodology of adding relatability to your research and information.
