Karen Sender is the Information Architect for NOAA Fisheries and leads the Fisheries’ Enterprise Data Management Program (EDM) and Fisheries Information Management Advisory Committee (FIMAC). She is currently leading efforts to modernize Fisheries information management and data governance. Karen represents Fisheries on the NOAA Environmental Data Management Committee (EDMC) and represents NOAA on the OSTP Subcommittee on Open Science and the Commerce Data Governance Committee’s workgroup on data maturity and data skills (MADSkills). She is a member of the national Fishery Information System (FIS) Program Management Team (PMT) and is a member of the FIS Quality Management and Continuous Improvement professional specialty group through which she has led strategic planning and quality management efforts for information management across Fisheries. Previous to her current position, Karen worked at the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center, working as a systems analyst in the International Fisheries Program, designing multiple data management systems, including the metadata catalog system, InPort, which is used at both Fisheries and National Ocean Service (NOS).
